The Little Women with New Beginnings

Me, Kaye and Natalie

The last few years I’ve had the great joy to be in a band called The Little Women With Big Guitars.

But in a couple of weeks, Kaye Reznick, the founder of our band, will move to Austin and Natalie Wood will have her first child.

Naturally our little band is taking a fairly permanent hiatus.

I am incredibly excited for them! I know they’ll do great! But I admit – I’m super bummed that our era as a band is coming to a close.

I first met Kaye at the Open Mic at Suzy’s Bar & Grill in Hermosa Beach. I heard her play incredible folk songs with the most interesting lyrics woven together that told fables of her times in LA. The strong, low tone of her voice commanded attention in that busy place.

I was just getting back into music again after a long hiatus. I barely spoke into the microphone on that open mic stage but afterwards Kaye came over to ask if I’d like to join a new project she was starting. She saw a lot more potential in me than I did.

We had lots of fun gigs with a showcase of talented musicians like Carrie Wade, Davie Gayle, and Nicolette Aubourg, and Anna Bell. We even added a Few Good Men to the lineup in Mike Holmes, Russell Somers, Kapali Long, and David Abrams.

Some months later, at Suzy’s Open mic, Kaye met Natalie in much the same way as she met me. Natalie, a sweet, clear soprano that sang catchy and angst filled songs that continued to play in my head for days and days.

The three of us met to rehearse and after lots of singing and laughter, we just never stopped making plans to play music together. It was all so organic and joyful.

As a group we’ve played lots of local shows from The Lighthouse in Hermosa to Hallenbeck’s in North Hollywood. Viento y Agua in Long Beach to the Citadel Outlets and the El Segundo Car Show.

We even made a trip to Austin to play at the Pecan Street Festival, which even though it got rained out, was still a great trip together filled with laughter and shows at Austin Java, Kava Bar, and The Carousel Lounge.

Our final goodbye show was this past Monday night at our beloved Suzy’s Bar & Grill in Hermosa Beach. The place where it all started. Where we first met each other and the other great friends and musicians that have supported us wholeheartedly.

I’m going to miss this chapter.
